The European Parliament, Legal Affairs Committee will adopt its position on the proposal for so-called corporate sustainability due diligence. The draft bill aims at minimizing the adverse impact that companies’ activities can have on people and the planet. The new rules would require firms to identify and end or mitigate their negative impact on human rights and the environment.

Working session I: Financing Europe’s future growth – During the first working session, the ministers and Central Bank Governors will be invited to exchange views on European financial markets’ role in financing the next generation of companies that will provide jobs and promote future economic growth. Working session II: A long-term perspective on stabilization policies and sustainable public finances – The second working session will take a longer-term perspective on the role of fiscal policy in overall stabilization policies. Issues for discussion will include the appropriateness of fiscal policy for stabilization in different situations, the trade-off between discretionary policies and automatic stabilizers, and how different conditions in member states affect the room for maneuver.

GLOBAL ECONOMIC PULSE

U.S. and Eurozone as well as South Korea report their GDPs. Markets are expected to be volatile. U.S. business-reported Personal Consumption Expenditures will be reported by the end of the week. Data and volatility will likely point to a quarter point U.S. interest rise in early May. In emerging markets, interest rate decisions are expected by Colombia (currently at 13.25%), Hungary (currently at 13.0%) and Turkey (currently at 8.5%). Poland’s inflation through March rose to 16.1%. Polish retail sales are also expected to shrink by 6.2%. Mexico’s and Brazil show similar trends. China Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) data will be released.
